Old Nursery Rhyme

Through the woods, down the vale,
Listen for their cackling wail.
Don’t speak, don’t try to run,
Stay the path, seek the sun.

Say a prayer, and light the hearth
Draw a ring of salt in earth
With shining lights of blue
The Duende comes for you.

Look not on their saucer eyes,
Their bulbous nose, tongue of lies
Their only sign an echoed chime
Out of shadows, you’re out of time

Heed your pa, mind your chore,
Wash, scrub, sweep the floor, or
With shining lights of blue
The Duende comes for you.
